Planning Recessed Lighting: Spacing, Dimmers and the Mistakes That Show

Recessed lighting is the fastest way to change how a room feels and the easiest to get wrong, because every mistake is permanent once the holes are cut.

How many lights, and where

A reasonable starting rule for 4 and 6 inch LED downlights is spacing them roughly four to five feet apart, and keeping the outer ring about two to three feet off the walls. Closer to the wall than that and you light the wall rather than the room. Further apart and you get scalloped pools with dark ground between them. Ceiling height changes this: higher ceilings tolerate wider spacing, low ceilings need more restraint or you get glare.

Layer, do not flood

A ceiling of evenly spaced downlights at full brightness reads like an office. Better rooms mix general downlighting with task light where work happens and accent light on something worth looking at. In practice that means putting downlights on their own dimmer, adding under cabinet light in kitchens, and keeping a lamp circuit on a switched outlet.

Colour temperature matters more than people expect

2700K reads warm and domestic. 3000K is slightly crisper and works well in kitchens and bathrooms. 4000K and above starts feeling clinical in a living space. The important part is consistency: mixing temperatures in one sightline is immediately visible and looks like a mistake, because it is.

Why LEDs flicker and buzz on dimmers

Almost always because the dimmer was designed for incandescent bulbs. Old dimmers expect a substantial minimum load, and LED fixtures draw a fraction of what a filament bulb did, so the dimmer never sees enough current to regulate smoothly. Fitting a proper LED-rated dimmer resolves the large majority of these calls. Matching the dimmer to the specific fixture is what makes the bottom of the dimming range usable rather than a flickering mess.

Canless versus can fixtures

Canless LED fixtures need only a small hole and a junction box clipped into the cavity, which makes retrofitting existing ceilings far less invasive. Traditional cans still make sense in new construction and where you want to swap trims later.

Plan on paper first

We lay out the room before cutting: ceiling joists located, spacing worked out around them, switch legs planned. That step catches the spacing problems that would otherwise be discovered with a hole saw already in hand.
