Home EV Charger Installation: What It Involves and What Changes the Price

Level 2 vs Tesla Wall Connector, hardwired vs 14-50 outlet, panel capacity and load management explained for Colorado homeowners. Book an install: (866) 651-5242.

Charging an electric car from a standard household outlet adds roughly three to five miles of range an hour. A Level 2 charger moves that to somewhere between 25 and 45. That difference is what turns an EV from something you plan around into something you plug in and forget.

Hardwired charger or a 14-50 outlet?

Both work. A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a portable unit and take it with you when you move, and it is often marginally cheaper. Hardwiring supports higher continuous current and is required for 48 amp chargers, which is where the fastest home charging speeds live. For most homeowners who plan to stay put, hardwired on a 60 amp circuit is the better long-term choice.

Do you need a panel upgrade first?

Not always, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted. A load calculation on your actual panel answers it. Many 200 amp services absorb a 48 amp charger without difficulty. Where capacity is genuinely tight, a load management device that pauses charging when other big loads run is frequently cheaper than a full service upgrade, and dialling the charger down to 32 amps still fills a battery overnight.

What actually changes the price

  • Distance from panel to parking. The single biggest variable. A charger on the other side of the garage wall from the panel is a short job. A run to a detached garage across a yard is a different project entirely.
  • Charger amperage. A 48 amp unit needs a 60 amp circuit and heavier conductors than a 32 amp unit.
  • Route. Surface conduit in a garage is quick. Fishing through finished walls takes longer. Trenching to an outbuilding is a separate line item.
  • Panel capacity. Whether load management or an upgrade is needed.
  • Outdoor rating. Exterior installs need weather rated enclosures and covers.

Detached garages

If the car parks in a detached garage, the practical answer is usually a sub panel out there fed by a properly sized feeder, rather than a single long circuit. It costs slightly more up front and gives you lights, outlets and future capacity in the same trench.

Do it before you buy the charger

Have the load calculation done first. It occasionally changes which charger makes sense, and it is far easier to choose hardware around your panel than to discover afterwards that your panel cannot support what is already in the box.
